Washington-based artist, Andy Behrle, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new sculptures to be on display at Columbia Basin College’s Esvelt Gallery in Pasco, Washington throughout the month of January, 2015. Titled, frequency, the exhibition will feature new works inspired by the movement of water, the invisible world of radio waves, and the breathtaking natural light of the Yakima Valley and Columbia Basin.
Since relocating to the Northwest after a stop in Alabama and years working in the museum world and teaching Sculpture courses in metro-Phoenix, Arizona, Behrle’s artwork has been transformed by his new surroundings. frequency will feature a new body of work which combines the shells of antique radios and phonographs with mid-century tube electronics and cutting edge digital technologies to investigate ways to see sounds and listen to light. This exhibition will also debut a portion of a large, immersive digital projection screen in the form of a twenty (20) foot geodesic dome- a project made possible in part by a 2013 “Grant for Artist Project” awarded by Artist Trust (a Pacific Northwest non-profit that financially supports artists and artist projects). Imagine a sort of planetarium in which viewers are surrounded by moving images of water rushing through the Hanford Reach. Together these seemingly disparate types of artwork encourage viewers to experience our natural world in news ways with the hope of stimulating more extra-worldly ideas.
Andy Behrle (b. 1977 Lawrence, MA) received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Philosophy & Religion from Elmira College in Elmira, NY in 1999. In 2003, Behrle received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. While in Arizona, Behrle worked for various galleries and art museums in the metro-Phoenix area including Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona Museum for Youth (now i.d.e.a Museum), and Calvin Charles Gallery as an exhibits coordinator, installer, builder, designer, and curator. While developing skills as a museum professional, Behrle also taught beginning through advanced coursework in Sculpture at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In 2009, Behrle moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he worked for the Birmingham Museum of Art and Birmingham Children’s Theatre while re-establishing his personal art practice. While living in the South, galleries in Tallahassee, Florida; Gadsden, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana hosted solo exhibitions of Behrle’s art. In this time, Behrle was also honored with an award from the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Alabama; an Artist Residency at Tulane University’s A Studio in the Woods; and inclusion of a large sculpture in Grand Rapid, Michigan’s ArtPrize 2012.
